When not trying to balance a startup and a career in finance, I’m sourcing inspiration and education and luckily, the journeys of some of the world’s most innovative entrepreneurs are well documented and available free of charge on the internet. If you’re like me and need the occasional kick in the butt to keep your momentum going, download a podcast app and check out some of my favorites.
How I Built This: Guy Raz
Something about Guy Raz and HIBT makes an hour long podcast seem like catching up with a friend. Perhaps it’s the engagement in his voice, his thoughtful questions or natural ability to bring a decade long entrepreneurial journey full circle. Guy’s guests get candid and provide the gritty details we want to know. From near failures to meetings gone horribly wrong, there’s nothing like hearing the story directly from the founders of companies like Airbnb, Rent the Runway, Yelp and Betterment to help reinforce your own entrepreneurial ambitions.
The School of Greatness: Lewis Howes
Lewis Howes is one of my favorite thinkers and motivators. Pro Athlete turned entrepreneur, he’s created a community of ambitious individuals who share a desire to create the best version of themselves holistically. Through his podcast he covers topics such as mental wellness and psychology, entrepreneurship and the often complex art of humanity with experts, celebrities and various other industry influencers. I also follow Lewis on Instagram which adds the often needed reminder to stop scrolling and put in work.
The GaryVee Audio Experience: Gary Vaynerchuk
GaryVee’s podcast will kick your ass in the most endearing way possible. While many podcasts help with goal setting and big picture aspirations, Gary’s approach is far more tactical with a laser sharp focus on accountability. With Gary it’s less about thinking about what you want or wish you could do and more about making it happen. Some motivational podcasts can leave you overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin, The GaryVee audio experience helps you develop the road map you need to set yourself up for success.
DealMakers: Alejandro Cremades
I recently began listening to Dealmakers because of its focus on the strategy and numbers side of entrepreneurship, specifically when it comes to selling companies and raising capital. Alejandro Cremades, entrepreneur and fundraising advisor regularly hosts guests who have closed multiple rounds of funding and completed successful exits. While there are a number of “how to” resources out there for fundraising, his podcast brings together insights from entrepreneurs who have been on either side of the negotiation table and is a must for any startup founder considering raising capital in the not so distant future.
